Extended Cylinder, Head, Sector Addressing (CHS/ECHS)

EXTENDED CYLINDER, HEAD, SECTOR ADDRESSING (CHS/ECHS) is a hard drive addressing scheme which overcomes the 528 megabyte address limit of BIOS. The BIOS must be capable of recognizing LBA addressing. If the BIOS can recognize the CHS/ECHS addressing, the 'CHS/ECHS MODE' will be made available as a selectable option for the drive in BIOS setup. This option must be selected correctly prior to the drive's installation otherwise the drive may not be formatted correctly.
